Wheeler Peak

An absolute horrible and embarrassing time staying on trail for some reason on the way to Wheeler Peak, the New Mexico state high point.

Started from the parking lot near the Bavarian Lodge at the Taos Ski Valley. Still a lot of snow (in patches) below the tree line so that can be difficult in places but the big blunder I had was not seeing the trail junction for the summit trail which is on the left before you get to Williams Lake. For some reason I ended up on a camping trail on the wrong side of the lake and wasted a ton of time looking for the trail over there and just climbing before I realized what was going on. So I was already tired and demoralized after returning to Williams Lake and then starting up the correct trail.

Wore spikes on the middle section of this hike and was happy to have them but others were managing without. This was a tough hike but happy to have made it! 13,161 feet, on top of New Mexico.
