Longs Peak

Fri Jul 06 2018

Longs Peak from the Boulderfield.

After our hike to Clark Peak we took a late start and headed to Rocky Mountain National Park.  We would hike in from Sprague Lake up the Boulder Brook to camp for the night before heading to Longs Peak on early Friday morning.

We were racing the rain by the time we got to the trailhead.  We hiked in just over 2 miles to the campsite and it was just starting to rain as we approached.  We had to quickly set up camp and were lucky to arrive when we did as it started raining and hailing fairly hard for about a half hour or more.

Some more forecasted rain for that evening had us adjusting our sleeping arrangements once we were able to assess.  Aaron got stuck moving in with Brian due to a major tent leak.

We woke up early with no additional rain and headed toward Granite Pass.   We were on the trail by 3:45 AM.  We made good time and reached the pass in time to watch the sunrise.  From there we headed toward the Boulderfield.

Brian decided that the Boulderfield was as far as he would go and the rest of us continued onto the Keyhole.  From the Keyhole the narrows started and were not really as bad as I had imagined.  There were just a couple of spots where the exposure seemed dangerous.

A look out from near the summit of Longs.
