FlatTop Mountain
Tue Jun 26 2018
Flat Top Mt from our campsite.
From Moraine Park we headed back over Trail Ridge Road to Grandby and then on the Flat Tops Wilderness area to camp.
We stopped in Grandby and then again in Yampa prior to heading into the wilderness. We talked to the rangers at the Yampa Ranger Station regarding campsite availability and picked up a couple of maps.
Once we had looked over the campsites and dispersed camping areas, we picked a campsite and set up our tents. The views were great! We took a short hike to Smith Lake and then returned to our campsite where the mosquitoes drove us into our tents early.
The next morning we headed up to the trailhead at the Stillwater Reservoir and took the North Derby trail up to the ridge that heads to Flat Top Mountain.
The round trip hike to the summit was over 9 miles and very rewarding. The ridge provided great views in all directions for the majority of the hike.
Planning to stay an additional night, we cut our trip short due to the mosquitoes and not wanting to be driven into our tents early again. We drove to Eagle and got rooms and a shower.
Up on the ridge, headed to Flat Top.
